virtualization - Replacing Virtual PC/Server with VMWare Fusion/Server for Development Environments -

i develop exclusively on vms. run boot camp on macbook pro , development on series of virtual pc vms many different environments. post andrew connell litterally changed way work.

i'm thinking switching fusion , running in os x wasn't able answer following questions vm fusion/workstation/server. i need know if following features virtual pc/server exist in vmware counter parts.

  1. differencing disks (ability create base vm , provision new vms add deltas on top of base [saves ton of disk space, , makes easy spin new vms base set of funcitonality]). (not available fusion, need workstation [$189])
  2. undo disks (ability rollback changes vm within session). (available in both workstation , fusion [$189/$79.99 respectively])
  3. easily nat out different subnet vm sit in. (in both fusion/workstation).
  4. share vms between vm player , vm server. i'd build vm locally (on os x/fusion) , move server (win2k3/win2k8 , vm server) , host there vm server. (in both fusion/workstation).
  5. an equivalent hyper-v. (both fusion , workstation take advantage of type-2 hypervisor 64x vms, neither 32 bit vms. vmware claims they're no slower result benchmarks corroborate assertion).
  6. ability share disks between multiple vms. if have bunch of databases on virtual disk , want them appear on more 1 vm should able attach them. (available in both fusion , workstation)
  7. (nice have) support multiple processors assigned vm (available in both fusion , workstation).

is there vmware guru out there knows sure above features available on other side?

also above has been free (as long have licenses windows machines), besides buying fusion there other costs?

the end result of research, much! you can create linked clones , full clones (which close differencing disks) in vmware workstation (not fusion). workstation has @ better snapshot management in addition other features difficult enumerate. being said workstation $189 (as opposed $79) , not available on os x. in addition fusion 1.1 (current release) has bunch of display bugs on os x 10.5 (works on 10.4). these remedied in fusion 2.0 in (rc1). i'll wait until v2.0 comes out , use both workstation/fusion provision , use these vms on os x.

i've not used fusion, workstation , server

1) yes, can create linked clone current vm state, or saved state (snapshot) in vmware workstation

2) yes, revert snapshots

3) there's number of different network setups, nat's 1 of them

4) vmware virtual machines created vmware fusion compatible vmware’s latest products.

5) ?

6) can add pre-existing disks other vm's

7) yup, create multi-cpu vm's

workstation costs, vmware server free
