i'm using mysql in particular, i'm hoping cross-vendor solution. i'm using now() function add timestamp column each record.

insert messages  (typeid, messagetime, stationid, message)  values  (?, now(), ?, ?) 

select * messages date_sub(curdate(),interval 1 day) <= messagetime
