linux - Hardware recommendations for Ubuntu XEN server -
we're planning set xen virtualization server using ubuntu. i'm looking recommendations regard watch out when buying hardware system.
some information our planned usage of system:
the server going host 4 or 5 instances of linux/apache/mysql/j2ee stack. each of instances contain mysql database no more 4 gb of data. of these instances being used mirroring setup of our customers servers able reproduce problems they're reporting, these instances idle of time (if they're started @ all). other instances going used testing purposes , we're going restart them quite often, startup time of our jboss-applicationserver (which cpu-bound) gonna important. contstraint amount of memory our instances need, 1.5 gb jboss , 500 mb mysql.
to clarify question little bit: can of course math calculate amount of ram , disk space need run 5 instances given constraints stated above. i'm particularly interested in topics important interplay of xen , hardware (if there any) because experience xen limited.
our budget ist 10,000 $ (just provide idea of kind of hardware can consider).
any advice appreciated.
for $10,000 can afford multiple multi-core 64-bit processors. i'd go more processors rather higher clocked cpus, if have choose. goes without saying, of course: double check processor buy has hardware support virtualization.
as ram can afford, @ least 8gb. you'll want decent, proper hardware raid card, 1 cache memory possible, 1 can create multiple volumes out of set of harddives - way can assign each vm own physical disk / raid array , not have different vms fight on gets use given harddrive. also, might able assign mysql volume of own increase performance. in raid array, more active disk spindles means better response time, go more smaller individual harddrives on fewer big ones. performance, sas drives, might want consider wd velociraptor drive - sata drive (hence cheaper) runs @ 10,000rpm , comes in 300gb version, offering pretty price/performance/size trade-off on budget (warning: unusual fiting doesn't work hot-swap drive bays, might considered unusable if want able replace broken drive without taking server down).
myself, run pool of around dozen centos/xen machines, on budget - (well, most) of machines cost around $200 , got of parts ebay. don't know how of diy effect acceptable - instance, decent amount of storage you'll looking @ getting kind of external powered rack harddrives. can, of course, buy nice neat , tidy rack-mount one, or cheap pc case , bodge together.
